Some of the school board members were skeptical about the school’s chances for genuine improvement. Perez acknowledged at the time that two-thirds of her teachers were substitutes. These included back-up plans to provide transportation if a child missed the bus.
Sending staff on home visits, they devised success plans for parents and children. Village of Excellence has historically served students from lower-income, minority families.Īddressing the Hillsborough School Board at a workshop in October that was mandated because of the schools’ low grades, Perez and middle school principal Lakeisha Maddox stressed the need to improve student attendance. “I might have the next Bill Gates here, and I would love for the next Bill Gates to come from the urban community,” said Perez, who joined the organization in 2019. She also said she is paying more attention to science, math and technology education. She said her school has boosted scores on the state English language arts exam over the past year and improved attendance.
